COULSON
I am researching my late grandfather's family. John Coulston (Coulson) was an artilleryman with the Royal Artillery and stationed at Artillery Park, Halifax, Nova Scotia. On 9 March 1869 he wed Clara Carey whose place of residence was listed as Halifax on the marital documents; however, relatives tell me they believe she was from Amherst. Her parents were Charles and Elizabeth Carey.
Clara Carey was born in 1852 and died at Cambuslang, Lanarkshire, Scotland 07 April 1929. After Clara wed John Coulston of the Royal Artillery in 1869, the went to Ireland (Terenu - or Terrenew, Dungannon, County Tyrone) and had several children Elizabeth(Bessie), Louisa, David John, Robert 1875 who is my grandfather, and Charles. The family later moved to Cambuslang, Scotland where they had several other children. It is believed that their son Charles returned to Canada and owned a farm perhaps in Amherst area.
I would be delighted to hear from others researching this family or who may have information regarding same.

COX
I am searching the place of birth of one, Ebenezer Thomas COX ,b.19 Dec., 1828 d. 8 Sept., 1916 in Kingsport, Kings Co., N.S. He was a noted shipwright and constructed 30 vessels in his 30 year career with an aggregate tonnage of almost 30m tons.
His parents were: Joseph COX, deacon. b. 1798 and died before 1871 He married 5 Mar., 1828, Mary BIGELOW, d/o of Ebenezer BIGELOW and Nancy Ann RAND. Mary b.1806, d. 1884.
I think possibly Ebenezer Thomas COX may have been born in Advocate Harbour, Cumb. Co., as he had a sibling sister, Mary Eliza COX, b.15 April, 1833 in Advocate Harbour, Cumb. Co., N.S. She removed at some time and d. 1909 in Kingsport, Kings Co., N.S.
This information was extracted from a genealogical/history book entitled THE COX CONNECTION (Descendants of Capt. John Cox 1717-1789) by Albert L. Peppard.
I am a great grandson of the noted Ebenezer Thomas COX, his daughter Mary Naomi Cox marrying my late late late grandfather Clemens DeBryus McLELLAN, s/o Archibald Thompson McLELLAN and Marie BLENKHORN, late of Advocate Harbour, Cumb. Co., N.S.
I am primarily just trying to confirm the place of birth of Ebenezer Thomas COX as being Advocate Harbour and ascertain when he removed to Kingsport, King Co., N.S.
Any assistance you might offer would be greatlyappreciated.

I am looking for Isaac DeForrest ( or De Forrest or DeForest) born in 1801-1802 in Nova Scotia. His parents I do not know. He had several children born in Nova Scotia so I think he was married here. His wife's name may be Aseneth. He left Nova Scotia and went to CT. where a couple of other children were born before he went to the Rochester New York area where he had more children and settled. It is possible that his parents were part of the Loyalist group since he did go to CT later. Any help would be appreciated.

DONKIN
Dear Sirs,
Having just read your entry on the above, after whom the town of Donkin
in Cape Breton Island was named, I am wondering if you have any
information on other relatives of Hiram Donkin.
My father, Laurence Ernest Donkin was born in New Glasgow in 1914. His father was Frederick William Donkin born in Missoula, Montana in 1892.
His (my father's) grandfather was Ernest Augustus Donkin born in
Amherst, Nova Scotia but I have no date for that; however, he married
Cecilia Dove Thompson, who was born in New Glasgow in 1886 in New
Glasgow.
My father always told me that the man for whom the town of Donkin was
named has been a relative of ours and he thought a great, great uncle.
If you have no additional genealogy on Hiram Donkin, would you know
where I might find this information?
Thank you for any assistance you can provide.

FORSHNER
In doing research of my family tree, I discovered that John Shaw Forshner, a grandson of Major Andrew Forshner (one of the founders of Pugwash), was my great grandfather. He was born on Novermber 1, 1830, the son of John Forshner and Elice Harrison. John Shaw and Christine Anne MacKay had 13 children, one of which was John Gordon Forshner, my grandfather, born 1882 in Greenville Station. John Gordon Forshner married Bessie McLean and they had one son, John Gordon Forshner II (my father), born July 12, 1905. John Gordon Forshner II married Maude Craig Hays in 1930 in Yazoo City, Mississippi. They had two children, Dr. John Gordon Forshner, born May 27, 1936, and myself, Hugh Craig Forshner, born July 9, 1938. Unfortunately, my father was killed in an airplane crash near Louin, Mississippi, on June 19, 1938, less than a month before I was born. Dr. John Gordon Forshner married Barbara Hart in 1963 in Benton, Arkansas. They have two children, John Gordon Forshner IV, born February 6, 1968, in Jackson, Mississippi, and Adrienne Hart Forshner Kinsey, born in 1972 in Dalton, Georgia. John Gordon Forshner IV, a pilot for United Parcel Service, married Carrie Miller in 1997. Adrienne Forshner married Sean Kinsey Atlanta, Georgia in 1998. Hugh Craig Forshner married Jo Ann Brewer in January, 1966 (divorced in 1976) and we have one child, Elizabeth Ashlyn Forshner of Seattle, Washington. I presently live in Lakewood, Colorado.
I would like to know more about my great grandfather:

HEON
The family name is = Heon
Starting with Charles Heon, they were in Acadia when the
Great Disturbance took place between 1750-58. Thay came from Normandie France.
I believe that Charles Heon established himself in Port Royal around 1720 and in 1723 he married Anne Clemenceau, then moved to Beaubassin where seven children were born. Anne died in 1748, he was then married to Marguerite Bourgeois of the same year.
I believe that Charles Heon's occupation was ship builder.
Charles would be my 6th. generation great grandfather.
I am trying to gather all the data on the Heon's to complete my Family Geneology. Any help I can get would be greatly appreciated.
Thank-you for taking the time to read my letter.

If you can look for a forfather of mine it would be greatly appreciated. It seems to appear that my family tree goes in two directions, just want a verification from records around 1869 in regards to a Kennedy"Everett"- should have had a family of about 3 boys and 2 girl and wife of course ,some of the sons names were Howard for sure, and maybe Munroe, and Alexander , with daughters' names being maybe Tina and Clara. Everett's first name appears in a family bible as a buriel date/year of 1869.My son for some reason has been led in another direction. It has been mentioned by an uncle of mine that, there perhaps was an Everett living in Amherest area before the family moved to Alma,Pictou County. Any information, if any ,along this line again, would be appreciated! Please forward any information on to Don Kennedy at "E" mail address: kathy.kennedy@sympatico.ca

LEADBETTER
Hi:
I am trying to locate information on Peter Leadbetter who died in 1875
at the age of 65, buried in Palmerston Cemetery, in Pugwash. We are
trying to find out where he was born and who for certain his parents
were. Peter's wife was Susannah Worth from Cape Breton, daughter of
Captain Benjamin Worth who came to Cape Breton from New Jersey and who
was granted a land grant in Mabou, Cape Breton. The only information we
have on Peter and Susannah is that in 1855 Peter purchased land in
Pugwash from James Black. In 1864 Peter appears in one of the
Newfoundland Directories for Harbor Grace where he is listed as a
Carpenter. Several of Peter & Susannah's children are listed as having
been born in Newfoundland, but no birth records have yet to be found...
I have not located any Leadbetter listed on any Loyalist list that I've
found yet. I also have not been able to locate much from New Brunswick
on any settlement being done in 1770 or there abouts. I have most of
the information on who Peter & Susannah's children were, I'm just trying
to go back on Peter's life to find out where he was born and who his
parents were. We have a piece of unsubstantiated information that there
was a Peter Leadbetter born in 1817, but I've never been able to prove
this or figure out where the author of the book, "Leadbetter Records",
J.E. Ames came up with this information. Most of the early family
information taking place in Boston from the 1600's I can prove with no
much trouble as the records are still available to do so.
What I am trying to do is to tie Peter Leadbetter back to who I believe
was his Grandfather, Henry Leadbetter, who left Boston in August 1770,
with his wife, Sarah Cumber, and their 3 children: Henry, Peter &
Sarah. When this family left Boston, it is theorized they went to NS,
NB or NF, but, I have found no trace of this family after they left
Boston. Our theory is that the Peter who was born in 1810 would have
been the son of the Peter who left Boston in 1770 with his 2 siblings
and his parents. I have not been able to prove this in almost 30 years
of trying. However, when I started in 1979 I had nothing, and now all I
need to do is to fill in a gap of only about 40 years, or roughly one
more generation...
If I had any idea of what area of Nova Scotia was being settled during
the 1770 or any records I could check to verify the 1817 birth of a
Peter Leadbetter in Antigonish, I'd be on it in a flash. I've run out
of ideas. The only other information I have recently found was a
listing that Peter Leadbetter owned quite a bit of property in Halifax.
If this were true, what agency would I contact to try and locate any
information on this?
Anyone with any thoughts or suggestions on how to break through this
brick wall I'd really appreciate the help!
Sincerely,
Jody B. Champlin

AMOS / ANDERSON / LATTA / McMORRIS / WOOD
I am researching Joseph Latta and his descendants on my husband's side of the family. Joseph was born about 1798 in Ireland, likely St. Johnston near Ardagh, and died in 1874 at River Hebert. He likely was in Nova Scotia by 1820. He married Elizabeth McMorris or Morris (1811 - 1844), who came with her parents to Cumberland County in 1817. Joseph and Elizabeth had four children: Abraham (1835 - 1919) who married Diana Wood, Matthew (abt. 1838 - 1864), Elizabeth (1840 - 1920) who married Thomas Edward Anderson of Sackville about 1861, and Jane (abt. 1844 - 1882) who married David Amos. Most of the Lattas in earlier times were in the River Hebert region.

On December 12th last,[2001] there was an obituary for the late June LANK of Parrsboro. I am interested in finding out who her great grandmother was. Her grandparents were Alfred W LANK b about 1856 Bass River and Margaret Ann Blair b about 1857 in North River. Alfred LANK's parents were Robert Lank and Ellen _____? b about 1825.
I have reason to believe that this Ellen _____ might be Ellen CAMERON, daughter of Archibald Cameron and Jennet Hanning. Does anyone know if this is correct?

LEWIS
My Father: Frederick Elmer Lewis
Born: April 21, 1930
Place of Birth: Five Islands, Nova Scotia
Died: May 15, 1992
Place of Death: Amherst, Nova Scotia
Son of Blair and Violet Lewis
Submitted By: Daughter: Linda Lewis
This is simply the beginning of my genealogical research of my family (mainly of my father's ancestors and perhaps some of my sisters and brothers) whom I seem to know little about given the young age I left them (while living in Amherst Nova Scotia).
I originally tried to gather/research this information through the "proper" government office - Vital Statistics of Halifax, Nova Scotia and came up with very little information but many dollars spent.
Can you provide any assistance? Any sort of reply would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your time.

LOWTHER
I am looking for help researching my family history. I am a LOWTHER and am looking for any information about the early family history. From what I have been able to find out, the Lowthers came aboard the TRAFALGAR in 1817. This ship ran aground on Briar's Island with no loss of live, although the ship and cargo were lost. Aboard were Joseph Lowther, William Lowther and his wife Hannah(Fox) and three children; Janathan Lowther, Thomas Lowther and another William Lowther and hi wife Hannah Greenly (sometimes seen as Greenlaw) and two of their children. William Lowther and Hannah Fox settled in PEI, while others settled in Cumberland County. I have also found mention of the Mary Lowther, aged 21 who came to NS aaboard the ALBION in 1774, and a Catherine LOUTHER (possible misspelling) and her husband James Stephenson from County Cavan, Ireland who also came to Canada (this time to Quebec) in the same year, 1817.
Any information that you could help me would be most appreciated.

McEACHREN
Greetings,
I am researching my grandmother and her birth family. I believe she is: Veronica McEachren, born in 1881 in Londonderry and moved to Pugwash as a child. I can't find the family on the 189l or 1901 census. Her parents' names are John and Maggie. Is there any information please that you have that would help me in my search? The family were Roman Catholics and I wonder if there is a church record of her baptism but I don't know where to look. Thanks from Victoria, B.C.

MEADE
Good Morning,
My original e-mail follows. I have had many replies but one has said that my Grandfather's name was Archie (Art) Meade and lived in Amherst. I am assuming that he has since passed away. If that is the case is there any record of this and does it link to my father, Thomas Edward Meade, born 1919. If you can confirm this I would be most grateful.
Thank you
Gary Edward Meade (Knott)
Good morning,
Please allow me to introduce myself. My birth name was Gary Edward Meade and I was born in England, UK, in 1943. My father, Thomas Edward Meade, was a Gunner in the Royal Canadian Horse Artillery, No 3608. He was also shown as being a farmer on my birth certificate. He married my mother in 1941 in Beckenham, Kent, England. After the war he was reposted from Western Europe back to Canada. My mother and I followed some while later in 1946/7 from Plymouth to Halifax NS on the Acquitainia and then by train to Amherst where we were met by my Father and my Grandfather. We travelled by car for 'some hours' to the home of my Grandparents. That is the only information I have to the location of my place of residence for the next few months. The marriage did not work out and my mother and I went to stay with relatives, near to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, US, named Meg and John Reid. Meg was the
sister of my mother's father, James Jack who was Scots. We returned to England via the Queen Elizabeth and my mother eventually remarried in 1951, thus my change of name to Knott.
So, having given the background, what am I looking for? I am at present researching my roots and have uncovered a large number of relatives on my maternal side. My paternal side has one name only, that of my father. I am trying to trace my Canadian side and am at present coming up with a lot of blanks. I would like to know my Grandparent's names and also those of any other relatives I may have. Where they came from etc, etc. I am posting on this site for obvious reasons and also on the New Brunswick site as we may have travelled that far north. I have been surprised at the low number of Meade's so far as it was originally found in Scotland, Ireland and certain counties in England. If you can help or give me any leads I would be extremely grateful.
Many thanks

MORRIS
Hello Cumberland County Geneological Society,
I am writing to trace my grandmother's lineage. There are a few references online to a Samuel Morris b. Aug. 7, 1825 in Advocate Harbour, King's County and died Aug. 1913 in Advocate Harbour, in your county. I was wondering if there was any more information on him, since he may be my grandmother's grandfather. I am sure you've seen many sentences which begin with "the only information I have is..." but I will have to do this too.
The only information I have is as follows:
Father: Samuel Morris b?, d?
George Seymore Morris, b. April 19, 1868 - d. 1941 married Mabel Annie Kehoe (1883-1921), from the South Shore somewhere, daughter Hannah Sell Morris b. 1913 - Hants County, named after an aunt, I believe.
Thanks for your time. I hope this does not requrie a lot of effort.

Looking for information on Basil Earl Rector born August 18, 1904 in

Rueben married Emma on March 23, 1895 in Springhill, NS and in the same

children. Emma married Samuel A. Morrow on Sept. 7, 1912 in NS. Samuel

ROBINSON
Hello
Surname being researched is Robinson:
From reading "Historical Notes Parrsboro and Vicinity" by D. J. Taylor (in 1900) I have come across some of my families history displayed in a way that shows much of what aspects of life at the times were.
In it is described how John Parr Taylor was named for (and at the request of) the Governor in exchange for a grant of five hundred acres of land. Later the writings describe who the children of John Parr Taylor married. This is detailed at my site at:
http://www.hayward-logan.com/Robinson/taylor.htm.
One of his children, married a Marchant Robinson, the quote from the writings is:
"Eunice daughter of John Parr , married Marchant Robinson of Parrsboro. They lived for a short time at Westbrook, and removed from thence to New Brunswick, They had some five or six of a family. They named their eldest son Silas Tuschess Rand Robinson for the Rev. T. S. Rand who at that time just commenced preaching at Westbrook. "The name" Silas Tuschess Rand Robinson. He lived with that name till about two years ago and succumbed."
One of the brick walls that I have come up against is that of Marchant Robinson, his family, and from whence he came. What I know can be found at our site at http://www.hayward-logan.com/Robinson/robinson.htm.

REID
The name I am searching for is
Surname---REID
given---------CAROLINE
d.o.b.--------8 Sept.,1866, Nova Scotia
death--------unknown
location----unknown
Caroline is my husbands maternal g-grandmother. All we can find out about her is that she met and married abt. 1889/90 or early 1891,--Richard Curnow Hawke, b.1863 Penzance ,Cornwall, England, We are assuming they were married in Nova Scotia because there are no records of the marriage in the BC Archives index.
According to the 1901 BC Census they were living in Victoria, BC, Caroline is listed as being born in NS, which to me means Nova Scotia? They had 3 children by then , all of whom were born in Victoria,BC.Their first child was born 1891.
In the BC1901 Census report they were living on Johnson St. and as well as Caroline and Richard and their 3 children, Richards parents were also living with them, Loveday Curnow ( maiden name), Hawke and Leonard Hawke.
There is no record of her death in BCArchives.
I'm sorry that is all the info I have about Caroline, but I'm keeping a positive thought that some helpfull info will come my way.

SALT
I'm researching my wife's family and we know that four of her Great uncles emigrated to Canada. We've been able to contact the families of the three who went to Saskatchewan but have had little luck with the fourth. He was
William Bassett Salt born 5th November 1863, Staffordshire (Bradnop area) and died 14 March 1950, possibly Pugwash area.
He was the eldest child of:
Hezekiah Salt and Hannah Bassett. Hannah died in 1869 and Will was brought up by his father and stepmother, Ann Mycock.
He had three daughters in England by his first wife, Emma Maria Cawdell (1863-1900): Ethel Maud (b 1891), Stella Margaret (b 1892) and Dorothy May (b 1894).
He farmed at Mount Pleasant, Belper, Derbyshire in the early 1890s before moving to Breach Farm, Packington, Leicestershire before Dorothy was born. From Trades Directories, I know he was at Breach Farm in 1904 but he was in Canada by 1914 from family archives. In Canada he had four more children by a second wife whose identity is unknown. The second family were Donald, Nora, Marjorie and Rob.
The suggestion of Pugwash came from one of his nephews in Lloydminster, who recalled being told he had "an uncle in Pugwash" but I have no further details. I would be grateful if you would enter the details on your database and for any suggestions you might have as to how I might progress the search.
Many thanks,

Hi there - that birth date for my great grandfather could be May 14, 1889 - I have seen that there was a John Smith died at age 52 in Amherst and according to the obit that I have he was 52 so I'm assuming that is he, however I have seen his WW1 attestation paper and the date there (in his handwriting) reads 1887. So I'm not sure.

STEWART
I'm hoping you can help me. I'm looking for a death record for a gr-gr-grandfather. John C. Stewart died sometime between 1869 (birth of last child with Emeline Betts Stewart), and the census of 1871. In that census he is missing (name was incorrectly listed as Steward and listed Emeline and the boys; Balcolm, Kempton and Johnson). In 1873 Emeline is married again to a Thomas Fillmore and is listed as a widow. The info listed for John C. Stewart is: born in Nappan and living in Little River at time of marriage in 1865. They lived in Little River at the time of last baby in 1869. Emeline then appears without John in River Phillip 1871 census. John listed as 29 at time of marriage in 1865 and his father's name was Henry.
Not sure if this is too much info or not enough!! Thanks for your time and effort,

TEED
My name is Carl Miller of Moose Jaw, Sask. and being a descendant of the Teeds of the Wentworth area through my Mother, Florence Miller [nee; Teed] I am very interested in obtaining more of the Teed history. I am in possession of the "Daniel Teed- United Empire Loyalist" book which gives a fairly comprehensive history of the early Teeds in Cumperland County, but has many gaps in it. In your article i note that Teeds were brick manufacturers in Wentworth. I would appreciate hearing more about this ie. which Teed was involved etc. I enjoyed your article about the history of the Wentworth area and would like to see more of the same. I am afraid that some parts of local histories are long lost and forgotten which is a shame.

WEBB
I have been searching for a Josiah Webb that was born in Nova Scotia in1796, possibly came from River Phillip.
He apparently moved to N.B. and married a Ruth Jenkins in Kingston, N.B. and later moved to Jerusalem, Hampstead Parish, Queens Co., N.B.
I have his decendants but cannot locate his ancestors. Perhaps his parents moved to N.S. from the states.
There was a Noah Webb, but Josiah does not seem to be in this line of Webbs.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.

WHITE
I hope to learn more about the White family of Amherst. This is what I have found so far, and can stand to be corrected:
Gen 1
(The Williams are many, this is how I have assigned their death dates from Christ Church Anglican Records)
William White I (died April 18, 1831, age 68) married unknown. ?Mary
Present in the 1827 Census: Methodist. Household: 13 persons, 5 males, 6 females, 1 servant, 1 labourer. Farmer, with 80 acres of cultivated land.
Gen 2
His son William White II (?d. May 22, 1842) married Nancy Caroline Morse (1784-1815 age 31), daughter of Alpheus Morse of Amherst (marriage bond 28 October 1800);
Present in the 1827 Census: Church of England. Household: 2 males, 1 female. Farmer with 15 acres of cultivated land.
They both are in the Old Burying Ground, Amherst #M-144.
Gen 3
Children of William White & Nancy Caroline Morse
- William White III (?d. January 21, 1850) married 1st cousin, Mary Morse, daughter of John Alline Morse (son of Alpheus Morse) and Abigail Chapman.
(Marriage bond June 1826 for William White, Amherst, Cumberland County, Occupation: Gentleman. William White and John Morse of River Philip signed the bond.)
Old Burying Ground, Amherst (M-141)
- eldest daughter Mary Eliza White, (died 13 Feb 1866) married Mar 14, 1835 Joseph Reade (born in County Clare, Ireland, died 19 Nov 1862 Bathurst NB).
She was married as "daughter of William White, Amherst"
- Ruth White (born ~1814) married 1845 in Amherst, 2nd wife, John Woolner Esq. (born ?1808 England) Shipbuilder, Bathurst NB.
She was married as "daughter of the late William White", so he was the William who died 1842.
Gen 4
Son of William White III & Mary Morse
James Stewart White (1827 Amherst–1909 Oromocto NB), married Sarah Isabel Hazen (1829-1907) of Oromocto, New Brunswick, daughter of Charles Hazen of Oromocto & Sarah Nevers Perley of Maugerville. This is where I come in, 4 generations later.
The Morse family is certainly well-researched, but I have found very little on the Whites.
Can anyone add to and/or correct this? Does anyone know their origin before Amherst? Did the family continue in Nova Scotia?
Cordially

Taylor Dunn makes to the Government of NB...Parish of Westmorland, she states that she is owed monies for teaching the previous term and that she is a widow of advanced age, and that her husband had mustered out of the army upwards of thirty years ago...the petition is dated March 1828...
